What to see in Hondarribia
Hondarribia, one of the most beautiful towns in the Basque Country, will captivate you with its seaside charm, its historic center filled with colorful houses, and its incredible gastronomy of pintxos, fish, and seafood. Located at the mouth of the Bidasoa River, this destination is perfect for enjoying history, culture, and the beach all in one.
The best way to discover it is with our experience in Hondarribia, but in the meantime, here are the essentials.

Santa Maria Gate
This old entrance to Hondarribia still preserves its medieval coat of arms and the statue of the "Hatxero," a soldier who led the way for troops. Crossing it, you'll reach the beautiful Calle Mayor.

Bishop's Square
One of the oldest squares in Hondarribia, surrounded by traditional houses with colorful wooden balconies. In the center is the statue of Cristóbal de Rojas y Sandoval.

Kale Nagusia
Calle Mayor is the heart of Hondarribia's old town. It leads you past buildings like the Town Hall and Zuloaga Palace, to the Church of Santa María de la Asunción and the Manzano.

Church of Hondarribia
The Church of Santa María de la Asunción y del Manzano was built between the 15th and 16th centuries on the old wall. It stands out for its imposing bell tower, ribbed vaults, and altarpiece.

Parade ground
This square still retains its essence with the Castle of Charles V, converted into a parador, and a viewpoint offering a privileged panoramic view of Txingudi Bay.

Guipúzcoa Square
It was built in the 20th century following the Basque tradition and preserving its medieval essence, allowing it to blend perfectly into the city's historic center.

Hondarribia Wall
The walls of Hondarribia are one of the greatest testaments to its medieval past. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries with Jaizkibel limestone, they completely surrounded the city. Over the centuries, the fortifications underwent various extensions and modifications, adapting to the growth of the old town and the military needs of each era.
Although some parts were destroyed in the War of the Convention in 1794, key structures such as the Cube of Santa María, the Baluarte de la Reina, the Bastion of Santiago, and the Fortification of San Nicolás remain.
The Saint Nicholas Gate, located near the bastion of the same name, is one of the entrances still standing. Many other sections of the wall have disappeared, but it still conveys the medieval essence of the site.
