Vilafamés Castle
At the top of Vilafamés, Castellón, stands the Castle of Vilafamés, a medieval castle built on reddish, triangular-shaped rocks. From there you can see spectacular views!
It has Arab origins and has been renovated several times. It retains walls, palatial outbuildings, and the keep, remodeled in the 19th century during the Carlist Wars. There is also a courtyard with a cistern dating from the Muslim era.
Inside the castle there is a cave with very old cave paintings, with human figures, a fish and a spiral, symbol of the sun.
The visit is free and open to the public. You can explore the castle, climb the walls, and walk along the moat. The walk from the old town takes about 10-15 minutes and passes through charming cobbled streets. From the castle, you can also see the Roca Grossa and the area around the Greenwich Meridian.
Visiting Vilafamés Castle combines history, architecture, art and incredible views; it's a must-see destination in Castellón!
Parish Church of the Asunción of Vilafamés
The Parish Church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, built at the end of the 16th century, is one of the most important monuments in Vilafamés. It has a large central nave, a transept, a presbytery, and chapels between the buttresses.
Inside, you can see Baroque elements such as Corinthian pilasters, arches with gilded details, and a vaulted ceiling with lunettes. The 17th-century main altarpiece, along with 18th-century frescoes and Valencian ceramics, make this church a true artistic treasure.
Visiting the church of Vilafamés allows you to discover the history and art of one of the most beautiful villages in Castellón.
