Peñíscola Castle
Peñíscola Castle, or the Castle of Papa Luna, is full of history and sits above the Mediterranean Sea, with spectacular views. It is built on a rock that forms the base of the old town of Peñíscola.
The castle, built between 1294 and 1307 by the Knights Templar, has a Gothic style that makes you feel like you are traveling back in time. Later, Benedict XIII, the "Papa Luna," turned it into a palace and lived there from 1411 to 1423, defending his papacy until his death.
The castle was modernized during the time of Philip II to protect the town from pirates and Turkish attacks.
Inside the castle, you can see how the warrior-monks lived by visiting the stables, the dungeons, and the cistern.
Outside, don’t miss the Artillery Park, with its batteries, tunnels, and ramps that reach the sea. The artillery gardens, created in the 20th century, are also there.
