Peñíscola Castle
Peñíscola Castle, also known as the Castle of Pope Luna, is a place full of history that is located above the Mediterranean Sea, with spectacular views. This impressive castle stands on the rock that forms the base of the ancient city of Peñíscola.
Built between 1294 and 1307 by the Knights Templar, the castle has a very distinctive Gothic style, which makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. It was transformed into a palace by Benedict XIII, the "Luna Pope", who lived there between 1411 and 1423, defending his papal legitimacy until his death.
The castle was modernised during the time of Philip II to strengthen the town's defences against pirates and Turkish navies.
Inside the castle, you can discover the life of the warrior monks who lived there, visiting places such as the stables, the dungeons and the cistern.
Outside, you cannot miss the Artillery Park, with its batteries, tunnels and ramps that connect to the sea side. Also, the artillery gardens, which date back to the 20th century.
