Parish of Balaguer
The Balaguer Parish Church, also known as the Church of Santa Maria, is one of Balaguer's most iconic landmarks and one of the most interesting viewpoints overlooking the Urgell plain and the Pre-Pyrenees mountain ranges. It offers a perfect view from the Mercadal, and if you'd like, you can get closer by climbing up the square.
It is also a Gothic temple, built on an old Romanesque oratory dedicated to Sant Miquel, and previously, on a mosque. However, if there is one story particularly linked to its origins, it is that of Countess Cecilia de Comenge, who in the mid-14th century aspired to make Balaguer the new episcopal seat of Urgell. To do so, she needed to build a cathedral: Santa María Mayor de Balaguer. The temple was built, but Santa Maria never became the new seat of Urgell.
If you're looking for things to do in Balaguer, this church is a must-see. Located at the top of the old town, the current parish church of Balaguer offers history, art, and unbeatable views. Without a doubt, one of the main attractions in Balaguer.
