Parish of Balaguer
The Parish Church of Balaguer, also known as the Church of Santa Maria, is one of the city's main monuments. Its origins date back to 1189, when Count Armengol VIII granted some land for its construction. However, construction didn't begin until 1351, thanks to a donation from King Pedro the Ceremonious.
By 1392, the first bells had been placed in the church, and in 1413, it hosted an important meeting during the Siege of Balaguer. It was consecrated in 1558 and, in 1575, officially became the Parish of Balaguer. Over the years, it was also used as a barracks and prison.
