Pals History

Pals, located in the Baix Empordà, has a history that dates back to medieval times. Its name comes from the Latin "Palus", meaning marshy place, although some link it to Pallas Athena.

Pals Castle was first documented in 889, when King Odo I of France donated it, and in the 10th century, it passed into the hands of the Counts of Barcelona. Over the centuries, the castle suffered significant damage, especially during the War of the Remnants, leaving only the Tower of the Hours as a witness to its former splendour.

During the reign of Ferdinand the Catholic, in 1501, Pals was recognised as an independent municipality. In addition to its architectural heritage, Pals has a special link with the famous journalist and writer Josep Pla, who praised the beauty of its surroundings in his work El meu país.
