What to see in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona

The Gothic Quarter, the historic heart of Barcelona, is a labyrinth of narrow streets and squares full of history, perfect for getting lost and discovering the city's past. Here are some of its must-see places:

Catedral de Barcelona

Barcelona Cathedral

It is an outstanding example of Gothic architecture with its famous façade and 70-metre-high dome. Inside, the crypt of Saint Eulalia and the cloister with the 13 geese, in reference to her martyrdom, stand out.

Plaza del rey

King's Square

It houses the Palau Reial Mayor, the Royal Chapel of Santa Ágata and the History Museum. It is a historic site surrounded by imposing walls and gargoyles, where in 1492 an assassination attempt on King Ferdinand the Catholic took place.

Puente del obispo

Bishop's Bridge

It was built in 1928 and connects two buildings. It is one of the most iconic images of the city. Note the skull with the dagger through it, whose legend says that when the dagger is removed, Barcelona will collapse.

Plaza Sant Jaume

Sant Jaume Square

It houses the City Hall and the Generalitat de Catalunya. It is a key place for the political life of the city and is often the scene of peaceful events and demonstrations. Definitely a point of interest when exploring the area.

Basílica de Santa María del Pi

Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi

Built between the 14th and 15th centuries, it is a great example of Catalan Gothic art. It stands out for its rose window of coloured stained glass and its unique atmosphere, lit by candles. Climbing the bell tower is permitted.

Las Ramblas

Las Ramblas

It is the main street in the old town of Barcelona, separating the Gothic Quarter from the Raval. It is famous for its atmosphere and you will find places like the La Boquería Market, the Miró mosaic or the Liceu Theatre.

Catedral de la Santa Cruz y Santa Eulalia barrio gótico Barcelona

Cathedral Gothic Quarter

The Barcelona Cathedral, also called the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, is a place full of history in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. Its construction, which took more than 150 years, began in the 13th century and ended in the 15th. What is interesting is that it was built on the remains of an ancient Romanesque cathedral and, before that, of an early Christian temple. This makes this site a living testimony of the evolution of the city.

The Catalan Gothic style of the cathedral is evident in every detail. The façade we see today is relatively modern, having been completed in the 19th century. Its dome, which reaches 70 metres, is a symbol visible from many points in the city.

The interior of the cathedral is impressive. Highlights include the choir with its carved stalls, the crypt of Saint Eulalia, where the remains of the city's patron saint rest, and the beautiful cloister. The latter is famous for the 13 white geese that live there, a tribute to the 13 years that Saint Eulalia was at the time of her martyrdom.

The cathedral is also surrounded by legends. One of the best known is that of the Holy Christ of Lepanto. It is said that this figure of Christ was at the famous battle of 1571 and that, miraculously, he bent his body to protect the flagship from a shot or even to prevent it from sinking. Today, you can see this sculpture in its chapel, with its torso bent, which adds an air of mystery to the place.

Finally, don't miss the cathedral's terraces. You can take the elevator up and enjoy panoramic views of Barcelona. It's an experience that completes the visit to this place full of art and history.

Gothic Quarter Square Barcelona

Plaça de Sant Felip Neri is one of the quietest and most charming corners of Barcelona's Gothic Quarter. It is located at the end of narrow alleys and seems like an oasis of peace among the bustling streets of the city. The square has an octagonal fountain in the centre, surrounded by historic Renaissance-style buildings, a school and the baroque church of Sant Felip Neri.

The old guild houses of the Boilermakers and Shoemakers were also moved to the square, which adds another interesting historical detail. Here are some details that make the Plaza de Sant Felip Neri a place you can't miss.

Fuente de la plaza

Fountain in the square

The fountain was crowned by a statue of St. Philip Neri, but it was stolen shortly after 1963. The same happened to the statue that replaced it, leaving the pillar unadorned ever since.

Peliculas y videoclips

Movies and music videos

This square has been the setting for the film Perfume and the music video for Evanescence's song My Immortal, which gives it a touch of cinematic fame.

Iglesia de Barrio gótico de Barcelona

The marks of the church

In 1938, an Italian air force bomb hit the square, causing 42 casualties, most of them children who had taken refuge in the church basement. The shrapnel marks are still visible on its walls.

Puente del obispo barrio gótico Barcelona

Gothic Quarter Bridge

The Bishop's Bridge is one of the most famous places in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. Although it looks like something out of the Middle Ages, it was actually designed in 1928 by Joan Rubió i Bellver, a disciple of Antoni Gaudí.

This Gothic-style bridge connects two important buildings: the Palacio de la Generalitat and the Casa dels Canonges. This small bridge, located on Carrer del Bisbe, has become a symbol of the neighbourhood thanks to its architecture and mysterious air.

This bridge is a good reflection of the Gothic Quarter, which combines the old and the new. Although the quarter has many medieval streets, most of the current buildings were built between the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Bishop's Bridge was one of these new additions, designed to fit in well with the historic style of the area.

What makes the bridge special is not only its appearance, but also the stories and legends surrounding it. Under the arch of the bridge there is a skull pierced by a dagger, a detail that has generated many theories. Some believe it is a hidden message from the architect, while others say it is simply a modernist decoration. However, the most famous legend says that if someone removes the dagger from the skull, Barcelona will collapse. In addition, many claim that if you walk under the bridge looking at the skull and make a wish, it can come true.

The Bishop's Bridge is much more than just a bridge. It is a part of the history, art and mysteries of Barcelona that you must discover. Don't miss it!
