The legend of the knight Galcerán
Galcerán de Pinós, a 12th-century Catalan knight, was captured after a battle against the Muslims. He spent 5 years as a prisoner, while his family tried to gather the high ransom demanded: gold, horses, cows, brocades and 100 young maidens. In the absence of the latter, the vassals offered their own daughters, showing great loyalty.
Legend has it that the night before he was to deliver the ransom, Saint Stephen appeared in his cell and freed him. The next day, the two knights met up with their people in the port of Salou, returning home to celebrate their unexpected freedom.
In gratitude, Galcerán donated part of his income to the church of Bagà and decreed the freedom of all girls born in his land.
