Discover the old church of Miravet

If there's one corner of the Ebro River steeped in history, it's undoubtedly the Old Church of Miravet. This impressive Renaissance church, located in the province of Tarragona, is an architectural gem that has survived centuries of history and wars, and has now become a unique space for culture and tourism.

A temple with deep roots

Built on the remains of an ancient mosque, the construction of the Old Church of Miravet began in the 16th century under the supervision of the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. Over the years, the church has been given various names, including the Church of Our Lady of Grace, the Church of Saint Mary and Saint John, and the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin.

Its main style is Renaissance, although over time it has incorporated Baroque details, especially in its 18th-century murals. Its structure is simple, with straight lines and minimalist decoration, but what is truly impressive is its history and the legacy left behind within its walls.

Witness of the Spanish Civil War

One of the most tragic episodes that marked the history of this church was the Spanish Civil War. During the Battle of the Ebro, a projectile directly hit the church dome, leaving a visible mark that has survived to this day. Furthermore, looting and the destruction of altarpieces and sculptures left the building in a state of disrepair for decades.

It was in the 1980s that a group of Miravet residents promoted its restoration, allowing this place to be used again, albeit with a new purpose: it became an exhibition and cultural events hall.

A space for culture and tourism

Today, the Old Church of Miravet has been transformed into a cultural center that houses exhibitions on the town's history, the Civil War, and the Miravet ceramic tradition. It also hosts events, which has restored some of its splendor.
