If you're passionate about history, architecture, and places that look like they're straight out of a movie, you'll love Miravet Castle. This castle not only has one of the most spectacular locations in Catalonia, but it also holds centuries of history within its walls, from Islamic times to the wars of the 20th century. Perched atop a hill over 100 meters high, Miravet Castle not only dominates the course of the Ebro River, but also the imaginations of those who visit it. This impressive Templar fortress is one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in Catalonia and has been listed as a Site of Cultural Interest since 1988. Join us as we discover its history, its unique architecture, and the legends surrounding it. The site of Miravet Castle has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Its privileged position on the Ribera d'Ebre made this hill a key point for controlling trade and military routes. This geographical importance explains why, from the Almoravids to the Templars, different peoples have left their mark on this site. In 1153, after conquering the last Muslim stronghold on the Ebro, Count Ramon Berenguer IV donated the existing Andalusian fortress to the Knights Templar. On top of these structures, the Templars built the current Miravet Castle, following the architectural model of the Cistercian monasteries of southern France. This castle-convent was a pioneer on the Iberian Peninsula and became the headquarters of the Order in Catalonia and Aragon. Its architecture not only served a defensive purpose but also a spiritual one, giving it a unique identity that blended the military with the religious. For more than a century, Miravet Castle enjoyed its heyday as the Templar's administrative and military center. But at the beginning of the 14th century, history took a dramatic turn: the dissolution of the Templar Order was accompanied by a siege of the castle that lasted more than a year. Although it is said that some Templars were executed in the famous Tower of Blood, the reality is that the last six knights simply surrendered a few days after their comrades and were taken prisoner. Even so, the legend remains imprinted in the castle's stones. Miravet Castle is divided into two large enclosures. The jussà enclosure, of Andalusian origin, was built between the 9th and 11th centuries and adapts to the terrain in three staggered levels, covering more than 12,000 m². The Sobirà complex, measuring approximately 2,500 m², was built in the 12th century by the Templars. Its layout revolves around a central courtyard, in the style of Cistercian monasteries, with rooms such as the chapter house, the wine cellar, the Romanesque temple, and the stables. The Templars employed advanced techniques for their time. The use of opus quadratum, with large, isodomic ashlars, lent strength and elegance to the building. The pointed vaults, the doorways with semicircular arches, and the black and red line decorations reveal a combination of Western and Eastern influences. Glyptographic markers have been found linking this castle to other European Cistercian monasteries such as Le Thoronet, Sénanque, and Silvacane. This makes Miravet Castle a jewel of medieval European architecture. Among the most notable spaces of Miravet Castle are: Despite some modern restorations that have slightly altered its original appearance, the castle retains an imposing visual force and a layout that allows us to imagine what life was like inside. Climbing up to Miravet Castle from the riverbank is an experience in itself. The route passes through the town's historic center, full of charming corners, cobblestone streets, and breathtaking views of the Ebro. Once at the top, the panoramic views over the Ribera d'Ebre valley are spectacular. It's no wonder this place inspired knights, warrior monks, and, today, thousands of visitors who want to connect with history. Miravet Castle is not just a fortress; it's a piece of living history that has withstood wars, sieges, renovations, and the passage of time. Its blend of history, legend, and architecture make it a must-see for heritage lovers and enthusiasts of medieval orders.
