History of Alquezar

The history of Alquézar begins in the Arab era, when a fortress was built in 802 to protect Barbastro from the Christians. In 1065, Sancho Ramírez conquered the place, making it a key fortress during the Reconquista. Over time, Alquézar ceased to be a military point to become an important ecclesiastical and commercial centre.

The town reached its peak between the 16th and 18th centuries, when the Collegiate Church, the upper floor of the cloister and the Church of San Miguel were built, enriching its artistic and architectural heritage.

Historia de Alquézar
Castillo de Alquézar

Alquezar Castle

Alquézar Castle was built in the 9th century by Jalaf ibn Rasid, on top of a rock. Although little remains of the original fortress, its location is impressive, with incredible views of the Vero River and the surrounding landscapes. When King Sancho Ramírez reconquered it, he fortified it, making it a key place during the Reconquista.

The entrance to the castle, surrounded by a battlemented wall, leads to a large Gothic door with a 15th century relief, with images of Saints Nunila and Alodia.

Inside, you can see the ruins of the watchtower, a cistern and the tower of the exorcism, which is next to the Collegiate church. This place not only tells the military and religious history of Alquézar, but is also an ideal place to enjoy the beauty and charm of the town.
